DIY

Client TEDxSydney / Agency BMF, Sydney / Film Direction Paul Bruty for The Glue Society / Production Company Revolver

The team at BMF approached me to direct a film about DIY enthusiast, Colin, who had built his own coffin. The film was to be screened at TEDxSydney inline with the event theme, 'Legacy'. I interviewed Colin (94) before filming and discovered he was a self-published poet. I asked him to write one more poem to use as a thought-track over a big move into space.

The 'continuous' zoom was only made possible with the mastery of SFX magician, Viv Baker, who made the very best out of some limited-budget solutions. The initial part of the sequence was shot with a horizontal dolly move and Colin standing upright in his coffin. This was masked and stitched into a drone shot to complete the ascent.

Asking Colin to summarise the notion, 'If your watching this, I'm probably ashes in an urn.' was the hardest piece of direction I've ever had to give. The film was played at Colin's funeral three years after we filmed.
