The Time Of Our Lives

Publication Glue Society Magazine / Artist Paul Bruty / Photography Derek Henderson

I created this sculpture for Glue Society Magazine after a long desire to restore a crashed car - in its crashed state. Through trying to source a crashed car, a misheard enquiry led to me finding a source for crushed cars.

The meaning of the artwork emerged from the the absurdity of hand-sanding endless folds of crushed bodywork back to bare metal. After sanding, the various sections were masked, prepped, primed and spray-painted.

The total process took three months.

The crushed car being picked up from the wreckers.

Sanding, sanding, sanding. (Henry Curchod also helped.)

Detail of primed bodywork folds.

The car, fully primed in its makeshift spray booth and awaiting the red top coat.
